My teaching philosophy proceeds from decades of learning under the instruction of many amazing voice and acting teachers, from the experiences of living the life of a performer, and from the lessons of life in general. I have studied vocal pedagogy with notable teachers such as Joan Lader, Florence Birdwell, Bruce Kolb, Jared Trudeau, and Amanda Flynn. I have had many acting teachers and studied many acting techniques from Stanislavski to Meisner to Method. As a teacher, I believe that it is important to always continue learning myself. I continue to study and keep up with the ever-growing and changing field of theatre.
I believe the goal for singing technique is freedom—how one can achieve their most resonant, fullest sound with the least amount of effort. For acting, similarly, how can the actor simply BE the role they are playing so that the audience forgets they are acting, again with the least amount of effort and the most freedom and spontaneity.
I believe all great performers have to draw from their life and bring all of themselves to their work. Otherwise, the work will not be full. It is very important to have a reliable singing and acting technique as a foundation, so that one can then feel free to “forget” about their technique and perform in the moment, making exciting, spontaneous choices.
Every person learns differently, and I don’t believe there is one roadmap that is the same for each student. Teachers and students must find this together, and the combination of the teacher’s knowledge and the student’s feedback is essential. I would love the opportunity to work with you!
